Fridge Magnets

A fridge magnet is classed as an ornament and can be used to hold important items on your fridge like shipping lists, reminders and in my case local bus timetables. Or they can be used simply as decoration. Magnets come in many shapes, sizes and a whole variety of designs.

The very first fridge magnet patent was obtained by William Zimmerman of St. Louis, Missouri, in the early 1970’s and it was a small coloured cartoon used for decorative display.

Fridge magnets can now be found in over 80% of households in the developed world and are used for utility and decorative purposes. The lifespan, yes believe it or not they do have a lifespan, of a fridge magnet is about 5-10 years and it will b viewed on average 40 times a day, that means a magnet will be viewed approximately 14, 600 times a year.

Magnets are becoming very collectable as they have become a tourist souvenir that are collected from cities or countries that you might visit. There are also all kind of memorabilia represented on magnets such as Looney tunes and Harry Potter magnets.

The current world record, at the date of this blog, is held by Louise J Greenfarb, the magnet lady, with a grand total of over 30.000 items.
